Set in Los Angeles in 2016, twenty-three year old Leona Oro-Wolfe finds herself with a knot in her stomach. This knot has been tightening for years and she’s not been able to figure out how to untie it.

As a first generation college student, and one who has dealt with sexual assault, on top of her already difficult life of poverty, she has to navigate the way to inner peace and external activism, on her own. Or, at least that’s what she thinks.

Over the course of a day she is confronted with a barrage of obstacles and it’s in this chaos that she is forced to change. With the help of her ancestors and their family heirloom, she begins to see things in a new light. It isn't until she is faced with the person she fears the most that she learns what she is really made of.

Basta has the female rising energy of Etaf Rum’s A Woman is No Man, mixed with the thoughtful nature of Mieko Kawakami’s Breasts and Eggs, with a vehicle of magic realism similar to Emily Habeck’s Shark Heart, and the heart of Cheryl Strayed’s grit-filled memoir, Wild.
